The Violet
Winter 2021
This Winter, we are excited to present the newsletter of the Theta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Theta Alpha Chapter. This celebration of sisterhood, legacy, and love was a much-needed time of joy and connection during a time when those two things can be hard to come by. This Violet is dedicated to the TA alumnae Sorors who made this moment possible!
winter in review!
Theta Alpha joined with Northwestern's office of Student Enrichment Services to talk about managing our finances! During this event we covered job and career opportunities, combatting food insecurity, obtaining classroom materials, advancing academic success, paying bills, extracurriculars, and networking!

In celebration of Black History Month, Theta Alpha hosted a screening of I Am Not Your Negro. Theta Alpha paired this film which explores the history of racism in the U.S. through James Baldwin's reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. with dialogue questions about Black liberation. With community members we talked about:
1. What is the role of love and empathy in movements and revolution?
2. What does non-violence mean to you?
3. What are some feelings you have been processing with the recent attention on BLM protests?
and more!
To support our peers in virtual learning, Theta Alpha gave a presentation based on the methods taught by ResilientNU - a student group focused on mental health at Northwestern. This presentation defined limited thinking patterns and their consequences, the four quadrants of self-care, resources present to support mental and academic well-being, and led participants through a guided meditation!
In celebration of Sisterhood Month, Theta Alpha alumnae Sorors joined the Chapter to talk about what it was like to be Black women in their career paths. Our panel participants ranged from charter members to recent grads, and they all provided a wealth of insight! A special thank you to the following Sorors for their time & very helpful advice!
